Box breathing in 32 seconds

Box breathing is breathing in for 4 counts, holding for 4, breathing out for 4 and holding for 4. Two rounds take 32 seconds. In a 28-day trial, five minutes a day of breathwork, box breathing included, lifted mood more than mindfulness overall, though cyclic sighing did best.

How to do it, as Sorry Scroll guides it

  1. Sit comfortably and breathe through your nose.
  2. Breathe in for 4 while the square grows, hold for 4, breathe out for 4 while it shrinks, hold for 4.
  3. Keep it slow and quiet. The screen counts for you.

One round is 16 seconds, so the step is two rounds: 32 seconds.

What a trial found

Balban and colleagues (2023) randomly assigned 108 people to 5 minutes a day, for 28 days, of one of three breathing practices (cyclic sighing, box breathing, or fast breathing with breath holds) or mindfulness meditation.

  • The breathing groups together gained more positive mood each day than the mindfulness group.
  • Cyclic sighing did best, and was the only practice significantly better than mindfulness on its own. Box breathing was close behind on average, but not significantly ahead.
  • Every group, mindfulness included, reported less anxiety and fewer bad moods.

So: box breathing is a reasonable, simple reset; if mood is the goal, try cyclic sighing too.

Why before a scroll

Opening a feed is often a reflex when you're bored, tense or putting something off. A pause at that moment changes what people do: in one sec's study, a 10-second pause before chosen apps led people to close them 36% of the time. Box breathing is one of the steps Sorry Scroll can ask for before a blocked app opens, alongside shoulder rolls and an eye reset. The active-body goal · all seven moves.

Questions

How do you do box breathing?

Sit comfortably and breathe through your nose. Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, hold for 4. Repeat. Two rounds take 32 seconds.

Does box breathing work?

In a 2023 randomized trial (108 people, 5 minutes a day for 28 days), all three breathing practices, box breathing among them, improved positive mood more than mindfulness meditation on average. Only cyclic sighing was significantly better than mindfulness on its own, and every group, mindfulness included, reported less anxiety.

What is cyclic sighing?

A long inhale through the nose, a second short top-up inhale, then a long, slow exhale through the mouth. It did best for mood and slowing breathing in the same trial.

Can 32 seconds make a difference?

The trial used 5 minutes a day, so 32 seconds is less than was tested. As a reset before you open a feed, it's a pause with something useful in it.

Not medical advice. If breath holds make you dizzy, skip the holds and breathe slowly.
