What is Sorry Scroll?

Sorry Scroll (sorryscroll.com) is an app blocker for iPhone and Android. When you open an app you've blocked, it asks for a 30-second step toward a goal you picked (two new words of a language, or a quick move) and then lets you in for 15 to 60 minutes. It's made by Syed Asif Sultan at Satak Technologies in India.

The idea

Most app blockers try to stop you scrolling. Sorry Scroll lets you scroll, at a price: every time your thumb opens a blocked app, you pay 30 seconds toward something you actually want. Learn two words, or get up and move. Then the app is yours for the time you set. Skip it up to three times a day, or close the app; some opens turn out not to be worth 30 seconds, and that's the habit shrinking on its own.

Why it was built

"I sit and work for hours, and I was feeling sluggish all the time. I'm the father of two very active kids, and I felt guilty that I couldn't keep up with their energy. So I built the move goal: a reason to get up and move every time I reached for my phone."

The language goal was the family's idea: a good way to pick up a new language without finding extra time for it. New goals come from people using the app, when they fit the same idea.

What it's careful about

  • Your phone use stays on your phone. On iPhone, Apple's Screen Time never tells the app which apps you block or what you do in them.
  • No camera, no microphone. Moves are explained and timed, not filmed.
  • No ads. The app is paid for by Pro, not by your attention.
