Apps that make you pause before opening Instagram

To wait before Instagram opens, ScreenZen (free). To take a breath first, one sec or ClearSpace. To learn two words or do a quick move first, Sorry Scroll (sorryscroll.com). For pushups, Pushscroll or PushBlock. On iPhone, every one of them pauses the whole Instagram app, messages included; only on Android can one sec or ScreenZen stop just Reels.

Five things an app can make you do first

  • Wait. A few seconds of nothing, to break the reflex. ScreenZen lets the wait grow each time you come back.
  • Breathe. A breathing animation or one deep breath, then a choice. one sec, ClearSpace.
  • Learn or move. Two new words of a language, or a 30-second move, so the pause adds up to something. Sorry Scroll.
  • Work out. Pushups counted by the camera. Pushscroll, PushBlock.
  • Explain yourself. Tell an AI why you need Instagram right now. Intentional.

There's evidence that the first kind works: in a six-week study of one sec, a 10-second pause led people to close the app 36% of the time and cut actual opens by 57%.

How we compared

Facts come from each app's own App Store page, Google Play page, website or help pages, checked on 23 October 2026. What happens on iPhone comes from how Apple's Screen Time works, which Sorry Scroll is built on. We make Sorry Scroll, so it's in the table with the same columns.

The catch with Instagram: your messages

Instagram is two apps in one: Reels and the feed you want to see less of, and the messages you don't want to miss. Here's what each phone allows:

  • iPhone. Apple's Screen Time lets a blocker cover a whole app or website, never one part of it. So every app on this page pauses all of Instagram, messages included, and tapping a message notification meets the same pause. one sec says it plainly: there's no way to build Reels-only blocking on iOS.
  • Android. Apps can watch what's on screen inside another app. one sec, ScreenZen and AppBlock use Android's Accessibility service to block Reels and leave the rest of Instagram working. Sorry Scroll's Android app uses Usage Access, which sees which app is open, not which screen, so it covers the whole app.

If messages are the reason you open Instagram, pick an unlock that suits replying: in Sorry Scroll, one step keeps Instagram open for 15 to 60 minutes (you choose), and 3 daily skips cover the urgent ones.

Which to choose

What Instagram already gives you

In Time management, Instagram has a daily limit: a reminder when you've spent the time you set. You can dismiss it, and it comes after you've started scrolling, not before you open the app. iPhone Screen Time and Android's Digital Wellbeing add a daily limit per app.

More apps that ask for a task instead of a pause: app blockers that make you do something first. Coming from one sec: one sec alternatives.

Questions

Is there an app that makes you wait before opening Instagram?

Yes. ScreenZen adds a wait you choose, and it can grow longer each time you open Instagram. one sec and ClearSpace make you take a breath first. All three are on iPhone and Android, and ScreenZen is free.

Is there an app that makes you breathe before opening Instagram?

one sec can show a deep-breath animation before Instagram opens; ClearSpace asks you to take a deep breath and decide. Sorry Scroll's active-body goal includes box breathing (4 counts in, hold, out, hold) as one of its 30-second steps.

Can I block Instagram Reels but keep my messages?

On Android, yes: one sec, ScreenZen and AppBlock can block Reels and leave the rest of Instagram working. On iPhone, no app can, because Apple only lets blockers cover a whole app. one sec says there's no way to build it on iOS.

What happens when a friend messages me?

On iPhone, tapping the notification opens Instagram, so the pause or step comes first. With Sorry Scroll you can use one of 3 daily skips, or pay the step once and keep Instagram open for the 15 to 60 minutes you set.

Doesn't Instagram have its own limit?

It has a daily limit in Time management, but it's a reminder you can dismiss, not a block, and it comes after you've been scrolling. Sleep mode mutes notifications; it doesn't stop you opening the app.

Can I get around it with Instagram in Safari?

Only if you leave the website open. On iPhone, Sorry Scroll, like other Screen Time blockers, can block websites as well as apps, so you can add instagram.com when you pick what to block.
